Hi,
Sorry for being too late dear sis, I got busy with my researches and homework
Any way, I decided first to begin with numerating the quotations.
-Page 2: "she was brought… night!"
Oliver is born in a workhouse, not in a hospital. His mother died without leaving any info.
(" the old story".. " no wedding ring") this is an example of showing in the novel. It means that this case isn't new to the English society. It happened before where girls come to a workhouse, give birth then escape or died (just like Oliver's mother.
-page 4: " it cannot be expected… circumference"
Oliver became nine years old. This sudden movement is not appreciable for the author. It is not smooth enough to move to this age after talking about the first days of Oliver's life.
-page 7: "this was no very… butter"
This shows the first step into series of changes in Oliver's life. Chang is one of the important features of the 19th century. Olive here is going to move from the place he born in to another one. Hunger and ill-treatment are two strong reasons for Dickens to cry. Oliver didn't need their embraces rather than bread and butter. Hunger and ill-treatment is the main problem that Oliver faced all the time.
-page 8: " boy," said the gentleman… I thought he was"
" well! You have come … in the high chair"
This show strongly the ill-treatment that Oliver gets all the time. It is the meeting between Olive and the gentlemen that suppose to take care of him. Instead of addressing Oliver in a soft tone that an orphan deserve by his name, the gentleman<<(irony) said roughly "the boy is a fool". Oliver is been humiliated and ill-treated by the gentlemen. There is irony in this extract, Oliver is brought to be taught, but the only teaching he gets is insulters.
-page 9: "poor Oliver… the poor people liked"
The first paragraph shows an authorial intervention. The voice of the author can be heard clearly as he discuss the changes in Oliver's life. The second paragraph contains irony. He describes the board member as very wise and deep people, while in the contrary they were superficial.
-page 11: "the bowls never wanted washing"
This is an example of showing. Bowls were clean because they put so much small quantity of food in the dishes, and as the boys always suffer from hunger they don't leave anything in the dishes.
-" please sir… more"…." Mr. Limbikins, I beg … more"
When Oliver went for Mr. Limbikins asking for more, they were very surprise from this request from poor Oliver. They consider it a crime to ask for more food.
-page 13: " that boy will be hung",, " nobody controverted… opinion"
There is an irony in the word "gentleman", because this attitude is not attitude expected from a gentleman toward a little poor orphan.
The board agreed, after the incident of asking Oliver for more food, to offer five bounds for anyone would like to take Oliver.
-" as I purpose… termination"
Irony " I purpose to show". The author always tell instead of showing as we've see in the preceding parts of the novel.
-page 14:" let not be… to pervade his frame"
It talks about how poor Oliver was living. He was isolated, suffering from not having his smallest rights of making exercises, enjoying living via a society, or receiving good religious education.
-" it chanced one … the High-street"
This is an example of irrelevant details. Someone came by accident and read the sign for offering Oliver for anyone needs him. This man need someone as an apprentice.
-page 15: " Mr. Gamfield having… Oliver had first seen him"
This is an example of irrelevant details. The relationship between Mr. Gamfield and the donkey is very ill. He treated his donkey in a very bad way.
-page 16 : the whole page.
The board and the man are negotiating about the money they want to give for giving Oliver. The effect of the industrial revolution shows clearly in this quotation. They are humiliating and insulting the children as if they were goods in their hands.
-page 17: " yes Oliver, said… which nobody can't love"
Irony: the author wants to criticize the treatment the children get in the workhouse.
-page 18: " when I say(s) it will, I mean(s) I will"
The (s) is used very strangely in his language. This kind of language is repeated so many times in the novel. The author wants to show realism. He wants to convince us that we are reading something real. Not every character in the novel should speak the same way.
-" it was the critical.. hurried off"
The word "the" implied that this is an important event. The magistrate understood that Oliver didn't want to go with the man. Before signing the document, he looked accidently at Oliver when he was searching for a pen to sign. He found him shaking. This shows that the writer depend on coincident very much in the novel.
-page 20 "Mr. Sowerberry was tall… smiling aspect"
The description of Mr. Sowerberry. Whenever a character appears in the novel, the writer should describe the physical appearance. This is a basic aspect of any work of art. This helps to prepare the reader's mind to accept the character.
-page 21-22: is irrelevant details.
-page 23: " while little Oliver… him fortwith"
There is satire in " the gentlemen".
-" although Oliver did… and bony fingers"
The effect of serialization shows clearly in this page. As Oliver is presented with no emotion effected from the threatening he gets in the previous extract, he is very emotional and start dropping tears just as Mr. Bumble give him a glance from his eyes. This shows contradiction resultant from serialization.
This is all I got. I don't know about the last lecture quotations if u take.
I just hope that I made good effort for you all. Any comments or additions on what I apply will be very appreciated.
However, this is not the end, I'll be back with more.
Se ya

lor=red]This is a real admirable effort. It shows how much u understand and how much u care for others. Than u indeed. I only wish that u wd take care of 2 things:1- some minor language mistakes...............actually most contributions here are marred by this language carelssness or at least lack of revisio9n of it after writing2- some kind of elaboration. Why are u afraid of expressing what u understand in detail? Prose is difefrent from any other course. U have to give free reins to ur feelings and ideas. But generally, i take my hat off for u.
