| ([]they were discussing as to whether or no to be friend with an English man.............the rule)t The speaker is the author and he is speaking to us the readers and these lins are from A passage to India by Forster.and it took place at night when Aziz,Hamidullah,Mohamed Ali are smoking the hookah. actully this is a main and central question of the novel. And the author divided his Indian chractres into two parts. One of them said that they can mad friendship withe the British people and the other say not and each part brought the evidence of what he said e.g.Hamidullah recalls the fine English people with hom he lived in Cambridge. Also the Indians know from past experiences, too, that the friendly English newcomers usually becom unfriendly under the influence of the career British officials and the example is when Aziz said that Turton -an English man_shown him his stamp collection so the other Indians told him "he would expect you to steal it now"and the word now means that Turton is in avery high position to care about such an Indian work for him as a servent so we see that the British man see himself superior the leader and the Indian people are the servents ,the subject. At the end they decided that the Indian people can easily becom friend to an English man ,but the English man refuses to be a friend for an Indian servent or subject. Therefore, we can said that people in East are very kind in dealing with foreigners they welcom them and want to be their friend, but when you go to any Westren country no one welcom you ,and if any one welcom you it will be considered as an exception and "The exception does not prove the rule". and the word rule is generlialization | |

This is a very intelligent approach to the quotation. It also shows that u understood everything that was said in teh lecture. Thank u so much indeed. I just want u to focus on the technique used by thwe writer like his language for example or the structure that i explained last time. perhaps in another post ill show how quotations can best be appreciated but this one is really veruy nice. thank u | |
